507 hired at Region 1’s Kalayaan Job and Business Fairs

Some 507 applicants were hired on the spot at the Kalayaan job and business fairs conducted by the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office I on June 12.

DOLE-RO I Nathaniel V. Lacambra said the number is around 18 percent of the 2,747 total registrants.

“Of the data, 96 percent were hired locally and 4 percent were placed in overseas posts,” Director Lacambra said.

He said around 28,595 jobs were offered by 125 local and overseas employers at four job and business fairs held in the region in celebration of the 119th anniversary of the declaration of Philippine Independence.

Most of the vacancies were found in the services sector, namely, financial intermediation; transport, storage and communications; wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles, personal and household goods; hotels and restaurants, and other community, social and personal service activities, the Regional Director told.

Manufacturing under the Industry sector is the second largest source of jobs, he added.

Director Lacambra said the job and business fairs incorporated the Department of Trade and Industry’s Trabaho, Negosyo at Kabuhayan (TNK) to make entrepreneurial opportunities available for those who want to venture into business instead of seeking formal employment.

“Around 148 individuals were provided business counselling services by the DTI to assist them with the essentials of establishing an enterprise,” he said.

The Regional Director said the TNK is the blueprint for the DOLE, DTI and other concerned entities in achieving 7.5 million jobs at 5% unemployment rate in key employment generating sectors such as agri-business, construction, tourism, IT-BPM, transportation and logistics, and retail trade.

Other government agencies such as the POEA, OWWA, PRC, Pag-IBIG, SSS, Philhealth, NLRC. NCMB, RTWPB, DFA, CSC, TESDA, BIR, PSA and DSWD took part in the activities by providing one-stop employment services.

The venues for the job and business fairs for this year were Civic Center, Candon City, Ilocos Sur; Manna Mall, San Fernando City, La Union; Nepo Mall, Dagupan City, and CB Mall, Urdaneta City. A post-Kalayaan jobs and business fair will be held at the Robert Estrella Gymnasium, Rosales, Pangasinan Tuesday.  END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez
