DOLE-RO I awards P1.5-M worth of livelihood for 156 OFW returnees, parents of child laborers in Pang

Some 156 OFW returnees and parents of child laborers received P1,560,000 from the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office I as start-up capital for their self-employment activities.

DOLE-RO I Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra, and Pangasinan 1st District Representative Jesus “Boying” Celeste recently led the awarding of check amounting to P1 million for 100 OFW returnees and their dependents in Bolinao, Pangasinan.

The assistance will be used to fund the beneficiaries’ Kabuhayan Starter Kit (KSK) projects which include welding, dressmaking, bread and pastry, wellness and body massage, plumbing and butchery.

On the other hand, 56 parents of child laborers in Agno, Pangasinan received P560,000 for their sari-sari store, frozen goods and kakanin vending under the Kabuhayan Para sa Magulang ng Batang Manggagawa Program (KASAMA).

Director Lacambra said the assistance given to the beneficiaries are part of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Program or Kabuhayan which aims to contribute to poverty reduction and reduce vulnerability risks of the poor, vulnerable and marginalized workers.

“These livelihood activities will serve as alternative source of income for our beneficiaries.  For the parents, it is a way of discouraging them from utilizing their children in hazardous forms of child labor for family income; while the OFW returnees can have a source of livelihood and stay home if they prefer to, instead of working abroad,” he said.  END/ Arly Sta.
