All for a good cause: DOLE-RO I gives P500-K livelihood aid, holds jobs fair in Laoag City

The Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office I took the center stage during Laoag City’s “A Cause for August” when it awarded P500 thousand worth of livelihood assistance for the LGU’s marginalized constituents.

Out of the total amount, P230,928 was intended for the provision of seven water pumps with complete accessories for 141 marginalized farmers from barangays Bacsil North and South, Balatong and Casili.  The remaining P269,072 was used for the Kabuhayan Starter Kit projects of 33 Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) graduates who will be engaging in beauty care (12), small engine/motorcycle servicing (16) and electrical service (5).

The equipment and tools were turned over to the beneficiaries by DOLE-Ilocos Norte Field Office Head Teresa Bonavente and Mayor Chevylle Fariñas at the city hall, serving as the affair’s highlight.  Also in attendance were Sangguniang Panglunsod members, department heads, PESO Manager Bernardino Rodillas, and officers and staff of the City Agriculture Office and City Social Welfare and Development Office.

Aside from the livelihood assistance, a jobs fair which immediately placed 34 jobseekers was conducted at the city auditorium.  Government agencies, namely, TESDA, Philhealth, DTI and DOLE offered one-stop employment services for workers and the general public.

DOLE-RO I Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra said the livelihood assistance given to the beneficiaries are aligned with the government’s anti-poverty eradication through self-employment opportunities that help increase the income of marginalized and vulnerable workers in the informal sector.  The jobs fair, on the other hand, shortened the jobseekers’ search for jobs by bringing together employers in one venue, he told.

“We take delight in being able to take part in the noble undertaking of Laoag City which serves as an instrument to help uplift the economic conditions of our poor constituents,” the Regional Director said.

Mayor Chevylle Fariñas thanked the DOLE for being its active partner in its various undertakings under its livelihood and employment facilitation programs.  “Thank you, DOLE for your unending support.  We look forward to your participation in the next “A Cause for August”, she said.  END/Arly Sta.
