As new mall in Urdaneta City opens, a high school grad gets hired

Over 1,000 jobs are up for grabs with the opening of a giant mall in Urdaneta City, Pangasinan in May 2018.

This was the report of the Department of Labor and Employment-Eastern Pangasinan Field Office (DOLE-EPFO) to Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra after the holding of a mega jobs fair on January 31 to fill the manpower requirements of the SM Supermall and its tenants.

The jobs fair was participated in by 38 employers offering 1,736 vacancies, the report stated.  It was conducted by Urdaneta City in partnership with the DOLE-EPFO and SM Supermall at the Urdaneta City Cultural Sports Complex.

Out of the 1,605 jobseekers who flocked to the jobs fair, 432 were hired on the spot, it was further reported.

Among those immediately hired was Jessabelle Castillo, 25-year-old resident of Nancayasan, Urdaneta City.  A high school graduate, Jessabelle was in high spirits when she was told that she was hired as Sales Clerk.

“Ang swerte ko po talaga at natanggap agad ako sa trabaho,” she said, adding that she did not have to endure company hopping and worry about fare expenses anymore because the employers were already in one venue.

The best part is that, she will no longer need to peddle fishballs and “palamig” along the highway, she added.

Another mega jobs fair will be held on February 9 at the same venue.

“We are happy about the expansion of the SM Supermall in Region 1 because this means more job opportunities for our jobseekers,” Director Lacambra said.

He said jobseekers can expect more job fairs to be conducted by the DOLE-RO I in partnership with local government units through Public Employment Service Offices (PESOs), local and overseas employers and other government agencies.

Last year, there were 68,335 jobseekers placed through the DOLE’s Public Employment Service which is implemented with the mentioned partners. END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez (with report from Roma Madrigal, DOLE-EPFO)
