DOLE TUPAD benefits 728 workers

The Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office I today bared that it released P2,233,450 total salaries to 728 displaced and marginalized workers.

Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra and La Union Governor Francisco Emmanuel R. Ortega III led the distribution of payments to 570 marginalized workers in the City of San Fernando, La Union on February 22.  They were joined by DOLE-La Union Field Office Head Agnes Aguinaldo, barangay captains and staff from the provincial government and DOLE-LUFO.

In Mangatarem, Pangasinan, salaries were handed over to 158 displaced workers on February 6 by the technical staff of the DOLE-Western Pangasinan Field Office.

Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra said the recent disbursements are income support from the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para Sa Displaced/Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD), a component of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP).

TUPAD is a community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment for displaced workers, underemployed and unemployed poor, for a minimum period of 10 days, but not to exceed a maximum of 30 days, depending on the nature of work to be performed.

Aside from salaries, the beneficiaries were also given micro-insurance premiums and personal protective equipment (PPE) for engaging for 10 days in the digging and cleaning of clogged canals, clearing of barangay roads and patching of road potholes.

Glen Ventenilla, 34-year-old person with disability from Mangatarem, invested his earnings in T-shirt printing business, and gained about P2,000 after 15 days.  He plans to put up a sari-sari store if business remains good so he can earn additional income, he told.

“Our emergency employment program provides income opportunities to disadvantaged workers while giving them better access to social protection schemes and long-term employment,” Director Lacambra said. END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez, with reports from Mhel Gaspar, DOLE-WPFO and Fredderick Gaerlan, DOLE-LUFO.
