Drug reformists get “second chance” with DOLE-KSK

Some 24 drug reformists in Rosario, La Union received P400 thousand worth of Kabuhayan Starter Kit (KSK) assistance from the Department of Labor and Employment-Regional Office I.

DOLE-RO I Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra handed the check to Vice-Mayor Allan Sabangan at the municipal hall in a simple awarding ceremony on June 11. Also present during the occasion were staff of the DOLE-La Union Field Office headed by Veronica Corsino and some officials of the local government unit.

The beneficiaries are former drug dependents who have undergone the LGU’s Community-Based Rehabilitation Program in coordination with the Philippine National Police.

The program consists of counseling sessions, spiritual nourishment, community service, skills trainings and provision of livelihood opportunities that aim to gradually wean the beneficiaries from drug dependence and eventually put them in the mainstream of society.

“We are glad to be part in transforming the lives of the beneficiaries through the provision of assistance that will enable them to become productive individuals,” Director Lacambra said.

After completing their trainings on Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW), the beneficiaries were conferred National Certificate II by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority under its Training for Work Scholarship Program (TWSP).

“I hope that you will use this project to prove that you are worth the second chance given to you,” Director Lacambra told the beneficiaries during the event.

The KSK aims to enable the beneficiaries to plan and operate livelihood undertakings through the provision of quick roll-out self-employment package of services consisting of short gestation trainings, start-up kits, business counseling and technical marketing assistance services.

One of the beneficiaries, twenty-five-year-old Raymund Aquie said the tools from the KSK will be useful in his work as construction worker.

“Maraming salamat po sa pagkakataon para maiayos ang aming buhay. Sa paggabay at tulong po ng gobyerno, mas magiging madali po ang aming pagbabago para sa mga mahal namin sa buhay,” he said. END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez with report from Fredderick Gaerlan, DOLE-LUFO
