Laid off workers thank DOLE-RO I for separation benefits

Some 14 workers thanked the DOLE-Regional Office I after finally receiving their separation pay from their former employer.

This was the report of DOLE-Ilocos Sur Field Office Head Emmanuel Hagad to Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra after the successful settlement of the labor issue filed by the workers at the said field office.

The workers have lost their jobs at the ISS Facility Services Philippines, Inc. following the closure of Philip Morris Fortune Tobacco Corporation, Inc. (PMFTC) in Vigan City, Ilocos Sur where they were deployed for three years.

Last year, the PMFTC informed the DOLE-RO I that the company will cease operations on March 1.  It was, however, discovered that the company closed on February 1 when the DOLE-ISFO conducted verification on the payment of affected workers’ separation benefits.

Requests for assistance were filed at the DOLE-ISFO on February 28 and March 1, respectively, for 12 workers and two more walk-in workers for the payment of their separation benefits.  The requests were addressed through the Single Entry Approach (SENA), an administrative process that provides speedy, impartial and less costly resolution of all labor disputes. Under the SENA, the parties undergo a 30-day mandatory conciliation-mediation with the aim of helping them settle their issues amicably.

Through SENA Desk Officers (SEADO) Zhiara Paola Abero, Rosemarie Sebastian and Sherwin Keith Abalos, the workers received on the same days the total amount of P348,968.92 as settlement of their separation pay.  It is so far the field office’s highest single-day monetary settlement recorded for the first quarter.

“Taos-puso po akong nagpapasalamat sa DOLE.  Dahil sa SENA naging mas madali at maayos po ang pagkakaresolba ng aming problema sa dating trabaho,” Rex Unciano, 36-year-old resident of Barbarit, Magsingal, Ilocos Sur said after receiving his benefits.

On the other hand, Charlie Tacho, 40-year-old resident of Pantay Fatima, Vigan City, also expressed his gratitude for the efficient resolution of the issue.

“Dahil din po sa SENA, mas lalo ko pang naintindihan ang aking mga karapatan bilang isang manggagawa. Maraming salamat po sa DOLE,” Charlie said.  END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez with report from Sherwin Keith Abalos, DOLE-ISFO
