Ilocos Norte IS workers receive over P7-M in total livelihood aid

Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra on July 7 led the awarding of P7,517,260 worth of livelihood projects to three local government units in Ilocos Norte in line with the DOLE’s anti-poverty thrust.

Taken from the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP), the assistance is intended to fund the projects of 2,216 beneficiaries from the municipalities of Marcos and Piddig and Batac City.

Some 626 farmers from Marcos were provided with P1,370,000 livelihood support in the form of tractors or “kuliglig” with complete accessories.  On the other hand, P1,400,000 worth of water pumps was awarded to 255 farm workers from Batac City.

“The farm implements are seen to address the problem of the farmer-beneficiaries on the lack of readily available equipment to increase the productivity of their farming activities,” Director Lacambra said.

He said the beneficiaries, who are farmer association members, can also earn additional income through their equipment renting group project.

“We aim to empower our marginalized workers to be our development partners through livelihood undertakings that result in greater incomes, increased employment and enterprise development,” the Regional Director said.

The amount of P4,747,260 was turned over to the LGU of Piddig to cover the salaries of 1,335 Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa ating Disadvantaged/Displaced (TUPAD) workers from the first district of Ilocos Norte.

To cushion vulnerable informal sector workers from the impacts of community quarantines, the DOLE implemented the TUPAD Disinfection/Sanitation project where the former are paid the highest prevailing minimum wage in the region while they are able to help in warding off COVID infection in their respective communities.

The TUPAD workers were engaged in declogging of canals, segregation of waste, cleaning, stone lining and gardening for 10 days.  The workers wore personal protective equipment (PPE) and were covered by GSIS micro insurance.

Mayors Antonio Mariano, Eduardo Eddie Guillen and Albert Chua of Marcos, Piddig and Batac City, respectively, received the checks for the beneficiaries.  Also present during the awarding ceremonies were Susan Maynes, Officer-In-Charge of the DOLE-Ilocos Norte Field Office; Janelyn Martin, Senior Labor and Employment Officer, and some officials of the recipient LGUs. END/Arly Sta.
