DOLE-RO I brings livelihood aid to Indigenous People of Pugo, La Union

DOLE-Regional Office I Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra led the awarding of P999,940 worth of equipment and tools to the Cares Indigenous People Association (CIPA), an association of wood carvers in barangay Cares, Pugo, La Union.

Mayor Priscila Martin was present during the event held on September 29 in barangay Cares to show her support to the livelihood project which is a partnership between the DOLE and the LGU of Pugo under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP).

The LGU provided P250 thousand for the construction materials for the project housing, training costs and microinsurance of the beneficiaries.  The CIPA shouldered P250 thousand for the lot, overhead costs and their corresponding share to the microinsurance.

Director Lacambra said the project aims primarily to make equipment and tools for wood carving and furniture making available for the rental business of the beneficiary association.

“The project will benefit both members and non-members in terms of employment generation, income augmentation, lower equipment rental costs and capacity for development,” the Regional Director said.

The CIPA, an association registered with the DOLE-RO I since February 2019, is composed of 55 members majority of whom are skilled carpenters.

Furniture making has become a tradition to the people of Pugo, making it the municipality’s One Town, One Product (OTOP).

Addressing the beneficiaries, Director Lacambra said, “Please bear in mind that the equipment and tools comprise only 10 percent.  Ninety percent lies in your commitment and teamwork to sustain the project for the greater good of your community.”

Also in attendance during the event were Veronica Corsino, Head of the DOLE-La Union Field Office; Verina Lopez, Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Manager of Pugo; Janet Mendoza, DILEEP focal person, and Pugo unit heads. END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez with report from Fredderick Gaerlan, DOLE-LUFO
