Three PWDs from Central Pangasinan to get better income amid pandemic

The DOLE-Regional Office I released livelihood assistance to three persons with disability from central Pangasinan in its aim of providing them better income amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The assistance, which come in the form of sari-sari store packages, were personally handed by Regional Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra to the beneficiaries on September 24 at their respective residences.  Director Lacambra was joined by Agnes Aguinaldo, Head of the DOLE-Central Pangasinan Field Office, and staff.

Among the recipients of the livelihood is Joseph Mina, visually-impaired resident of Dagupan City who used to work as a singer in a restaurant in Ermita, Manila.  Due to lockdowns, Joseph was forced to leave his work and return to the province.

Having three children to feed, Joseph admitted that his family finds difficulty in making both ends meet with the current crisis.

“Maraming salamat po sa DOLE. Ang laking tulong po ng kabuhayang ipinagkaloob ninyo,” Joseph said.

The other recipients are Marily Viray, 37 years old, and Ella Estrada, 34 years old, both orthopedically-impaired from Manaoag, Pangasinan.

Director Lacambra said PWDs are among the eligible beneficiaries of the Kabuhayan Program, a component of the DOLE Integrated Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (DILEEP), which aims to contribute to poverty reduction through the creation of enterprises that help augment income and generate jobs.

“One way to make PWDs part of our decent work agenda and inclusive growth is to give them equal access to employment and economic opportunities through the DOLE livelihood,” he added.

Labor Secretary Silvestre H. Bello III has assured the protection of rights and empowerment of PWDs as the country’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disability.  END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez with report from Panfilo Dioquino, Jr., DOLE-CPFO
