“We work for you, so you can stay home and study.”

This is the message of Regional  Director Nathaniel V. Lacambra for children as the DOLE-Regional Office I continues to implement its child labor prevention and elimination program amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Among its services under the program is the provision of an array of social services to child laborers and children at risk of child labor through the Project Angel Tree.

On January 18, the DOLE-RO I, through its La Union Field Office, distributed educational kits to 160 child laborers of Rosario, La Union to aid their families in their expenses as the entire world resorted to modular and online learning to arrest the spread of the virus.

The beneficiaries are among the child laborers who were profiled by the DOLE-RO I to ensure the delivery of most appropriate interventions to protect them and their families from the adverse effects of the global health crisis.

Each of the beneficiaries received a kit consisting of table, chair and school supplies.

Cornelio Oribello, Jr., 43 years old, expressed his gratitude on behalf of his daughter Angelica Joy Oribello who is currently a Senior High School student.

“I am happy that my daughter aspires to become a lawyer someday despite our family’s economic situation,” Cornelio, a construction worker, said.

The DOLE envisions a child labor-free Philippines by 2022 through its Philippine Program Against Child Labor which works towards the prevention and progressive elimination of child labor through protection, withdrawal, healing and reintegration of child workers into a caring society, and supports alleviation of extreme poverty, which has been the main cause of child labor in the country.

Last year, the DOLE assisted close to 340,000 minors and their families under the PPACL.  END/Arly Sta. Ana-Valdez with report from Fredderick Gaerlan, DOLE-LUFO
