DOLE KSK transforms PWD into entrepreneur

A typical day for Christy Mae Federico consists of attending to customers of her sari-sari store. She owns and manages the small livelihood which she received from the DOLE-Regional Office I on April 11, 2019.

The assistance is under the Kabuhayan Starter Kit (KSK) project which enables individuals to start their business through the provision of tools, jigs and raw materials.  It also includes skills training, business counseling and networking services.

Christy Mae is among the Persons with Disability (PWDs) who were granted livelihood assistance by the DOLE-RO I.  She was born with musculoskeletal disability. All her life she has been strapped to a wheelchair because her limbs are too weak to carry her body.  She also suffers from rheumatic heart disease.

But the 41-year-old resident of barangay Sagayad, City of San Fernando, La Union has put a different meaning to “PWD”.

As proof, she was able to properly manage her sari-sari store despite her condition.  According to her, she earns an average of P3,000 monthly, which helps support her family’s basic needs.

She was also able to set aside some amount to improve her room.

The KSK, she said, served as an opportunity for her to become productive and to find her self-worth.
