Regional director Henry John Jalbuena today announced that the Department of Labor and Employment has prepared an emergency employment program for workers most affected by typhoons Pedring and Quiel.

Jalbuena said Labor Chief Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz has approved the release of P4 million as emergency assistance to agriculture workers in hardest-hit municipalities of the region.

He said the assistance will provide immediate relief to workers whose source of income has been impaired as a result of the successive typhoons which ravaged Northern Luzon this September and October.  “While the agriculture industry is recovering from its losses, the DOLE will provide emergency employment to the affected workers in small infrastructure projects,” he added.

The DOLE-Regional Office 1 identified 17 cities and municipalities in Ilocos Sur, La Union and Pangasinan as recipients under the program.  These cities and municipalities are Santa in Ilocos Sur; San Fernando City, Bauang and Aringay in La Union; and Dagupan City, Aguilar, Balungao, Bayambang, Binmaley, Calasiao, Infanta, Lingayen, Mangatarem, Rosales, Sta. Barbara, Umingan and Urbiztondo in Pangasinan.

1,075 workers will be employed for 15 days in community projects like clearing or cleaning of drainage, repair of classrooms and clearing of roads.

While employed, the workers will be receiving P248 daily, which is the applicable minimum wage rate in community and social services. asv
